Dear Parents,
My name is Charles
Kim, and I will be your child’s teacher this year. I am excited about the upcoming school year,
and I look forward to getting to know all of your children!
I have a few
housekeeping items to get us started.
First, I have attached a class schedule to this letter so that you will
know the basic layout of our day. On the schedule you will see our specials
listed. Please make sure your child
wears tennis shoes on Monday so that they will be able to participate in
PE. It would also be helpful if you
would send a water bottle with your child.
They will need it after recess, especially when it is hot outside.
After Labor Day,
the 2nd grade will start assigning homework and assessing behavior. Each Monday, a homework schedule and behavior
chart for the week will be sent home. The
materials for homework will not be provided until the day of the actual
assignment. I feel that it is important
to do a little bit each day rather than try to do it all in one night. Homework will consist of reading, spelling
and math each night. I feel that it is
your responsibility as a parent to look over your child’s homework and have
them correct visible mistakes. In doing
this, you are keeping them from reinforcing bad habits. It also keeps you well informed of what we
are doing in the classroom! I ask that
you initial the behavior portion of the homework sheet and their reading
log each night.
Due to our mid-day
lunch, after the 1st week we will not have a designated snack
time. If you would like to send a
healthy snack for your child, they can take it out to recess in the afternoon
at 3:00.
I will continue
with the tradition of Tuesday folders which will be provided for your
child. Each Tuesday they will bring home
a lot of important information for you to read along with our weekly class
newsletter. This newsletter will provide
you with class information so please make sure to read over it each week.
Please feel free
to call or e-mail me anytime. I will
always be available to you when it comes to the best interests of your child,
and I believe that parents and teachers are teammates who need to work
together.
Have a wonderful
day!

Welcome
to Mr. Kim’s Second Grade at York!!
Behavior Light
System
We will be using the stoplight
behavior system in our classroom. Each
student will begin on the color green every day. During the day, if a student
cannot correct himself or herself within three redirections then they move to
the color yellow. On the weekly homework
sheet there is a behavior chart that will show you what color they had for the
day. Please initial this each night.
Yellow – Their name goes beside
the yellow color and they walk 3 laps on the “Thinking Trail” at recess. You will receive a note on their behavior
chart that goes home each night.
Orange – If on yellow, and they
need another redirection, their name then goes on orange and they walk the
“Thinking Trail” during recess for ten minutes to reflect on their behavior and
what they can do to improve.
Purple- If on orange, and they
still need redirection, they will walk the thinking trail at recess, and a
phone call of email will be administered.
Red- if all of the above
happens and it continues on then the child will be sent to the office with a
referral.
If
a student has reached orange but has managed to turn their behavior around, they
have the opportunity to move back to yellow and then green at my discretion for
the 1st quarter. Once on
purple, I don’t feel that they have made the choice to correct their behavior
and there is no going back. My
expectations will tighten each quarter and I will make sure that you are well
informed when they do.
Bravo
Bones
Bravo Bones are our school-wide
positive behavior system. Bones are
given out when a class is showing good behavior. A “Bones” progress chart hangs outside each
classroom door to show the school how well we are doing!
Homework
Folders
Homework folders will be sent home
each night. Homework, their behavior
chart and important information that you will need will be in this folder. Each night the class will have math,
spelling, and reading homework. On
Mondays, a homework sheet will be given out with the spelling words on the
back. BOTH spelling and math homework
should be completed each night and returned the next day. Reading will be recorded in their reading log
by the student and then initialed by you.
It is very important that you
review both math and spelling homework to ensure that it is done correctly.
Tuesday
Folders
Each Tuesday a folder will come
home. This will be where the majority of
important school information will be found.
It will also contain your child’s class work from the previous week. My weekly newsletter will always be on the
top, followed by important school information.
Please take out the contents of the folder and return it on Wednesday. Please treat these folders with care…they
will not receive a new one until after the winter break.
Snack
The first week of school we will have
a designated snack time. After the first
week, your child is welcome to bring a healthy snack to eat during recess.
Water
Bottles
I
strongly suggest that each child bring a water bottle to keep in their
cubby. We may not always have time to
stop by the water fountain after recess.
The water bottle needs to be a 16 oz. size bottle with a screw on cap.
Birthday
Celebrations
We
love birthday parties!! If you would
like to bring in a special treat, please plan to do so during our lunchtime 11:30
or recess 3:00. We are unable to
celebrate during instructional time. If
you are unable to come yourself, just send in your treat and I will make sure
that it makes it to lunch! All treats
MUST be purchased, and it cannot be homemade.
Class
E-Mail
The
best way to reach me is by e-mail. My
e-mail address is ckim@wcpss.net. I check my e-mail throughout the day. In case of an emergency, please call the
school at 881-4960.
Change of
Clothes
Although we are in 2nd
grade, accidents still do happen. If you
think this will be an issue for your child, please send in a change of clothes
for them. If not, the school would
appreciate any donations of girls and boys underpants and pants.
Thank
you! Sincerely, Mr. Kim J
